WHAT IS A BANKRUPTCY LAW BOARD CERTIFIED ATTORNEY?
A Board Certified attorney is an attorney who has demonstrated
special competence in a particula field in which the Texas Board of
Legal Specialization has certified their competence.
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
For Board Certification in Bankruptcy Law, all Bankruptcy Law Board
Certified attorneys must have these general requirements.
- Been licensed to practice law for at least 5 years.
- Practiced bankruptcy law for at least 3 years.
- Devoted a minimum of 30% of their law practice to bankruptcy
law.
- Handled a wide variety of bankruptcy law matters to
demonstrate experience and involvement.
- Attended bankruptcy law continuing legal education seminars
regularly to keep their legal training up to date.
- Been evaluated by fellow lawyers and judges.
- Passed a day-long written examination

How does the consumer know whether an
attorney is Board Certified in Bankruptcy Law?
A Board Certified attorney is entitled to
indicate certification on their business card and letterhead by
stating they are "Board Certified - Consumer or Business Bankruptcy
Law - Texas Board of Legal Specialization." They may display
the Certification of Special Competence awarded by the Texas Board
of Legal Specialization, and list the certification in legal
directories and telephone listings under "Attorneys - Board
Certified."
How long does an attorney remain
certified in Bankruptcy law?
Certification is for a period of 5 years.
To remain certified after that time, every 5 years the attorney must
apply for recertification and meet the requirements for continued
experience, peer review and continuing legal education.
What
special requirements must a lawyer who is Board Certified in
Bankruptcy Law meet?
There are subcategories in
Bankruptcy Law of Business or Consumer Law. A lawyer who is
Board Certified in:
-Business Bankruptcy:
must have extensice experience in representing business debtors and
creditors in all areas involving the Bankruptcy Code and other
aspects of debtor/creditor relations.
-Consumer Bankruptcy:
must have represented non-business debtors and creditors in all
areas of bankruptcy including consumer debtor/creditor relations
affected by bankruptcy.
